[Class 94 (i).] Relates to a machine for filling cartons &c. with powder and comprising a chamber b of flattened oval form having filling nozzles h depending from its base in spaced parallel lines and communicating with a channel or space b<1> defined by the wall of the chamber and an endless belt d, the belt d being provided with vanes d<1> adapted to carry the powder past the nozzles, through which it falls when they are opened by their controlling means. According to the invention, cartons &c. placed on an endless belt j are divided by a V-shaped deflector v into parallel rows arranged at the edge of the belt beside tables k, and when a number corresponding to the filling nozzles has been fed forwards, the leading carton operates a switch, which controls the motor o of a pair of cam shafts o, so that cams on the shafts, operating through levers s<3>, links s<4>, and levers s<2> displace outward rods s<1> carrying rails r which transfer the cartons to the tables k ; cams n acting through levers m<2>, links m<1> and levers m raise the tables k to the filling nozzles and keep them there while further cams displace discs t in the chamber b to uncover the nozzles. On completion of the filling the operations are reversed and the motor p is switched off by projections on one or other of the links. If cartons with closing flaps are to be filled double rows are fed to each side of the chamber b and treble rails not only transfer the cartons but move upwards to dispose the flaps about the nozzles.
