[Classes 120 (i) and 120 (iii).] Raw cotton is cleaned and sorted prior to ginning by being subjected to the action of a beater 1, Fig. 1, rotating in a drum or casing 6 which is rotated oppositely to the beater. The cotton bolls are fed axially through the casing 6 from the inlet 9 by the inclined beater-blades 5, unripened or undeveloped bolls being projected through the bars 13 of the casing 6 while well-developed bolls drop through bars 11 into a hopper 14 and conduit 15, Fig. 2, where the cotton is loosened by beaters 19a .. 19d, sand, leaves, &c., being expelled through the grating 21. The beater 1 is keyed to the shaft 2, the end members 7, 8 of the casing 6 being loose thereon. The drum 6 for the length of the bars 13 is enclosed by an undercasing 17. The beater 1 is driven through pulleys 23, 24 from the main shaft 22 and the casing 6 therefrom through the pulleys 25 .. 28. The beaters 19a .. 19d are also driven therefrom.
