Abstract

355,246. Knitting. SPIERS, Ltd. W. and SPIERS, E., XL Works, Walnut Street, Leicester. May 19, 1930, No. 15309. [Class 74 (ii).] Fashioned seamless hosiery &c. is made upon a warp machine having parallel needle beds and independently-operated needles. Curved bearded needles as described in Specification 355,252 are preferably proviced. The needles 2 are arranged in outwardly concave beds 1 and are actuated by selector members 12 under the control of jacquard bands 15. The :nembers 12 are arranged in beds 29 pivoted at 31 so that their inner ends are moved parallel to the beds 2. The members 12 are returned to norn al position by members 151 after selection by the bands 15. The jacquard bands allow additional needles to be inserted for fashioning, and are preferably so designed that alternate needles are selected for operation at one side of the jacquard drum 17, and the intermediate needles are selected at the next pick. The number of bobbins or other yarn supplies is thus halved. Guides 36, 37 are provided for supplying yarns to one bed of needles, and corresponding guides 36a, 37a are provided for the other bed, the guides being moved from the position shown in full lines in Fig. 3 to that shown in chain-dotted lines, and an auxiliary guide 38 is provided for supplying yarns to needles in both beds to unite the knitted webs to form tubular fabric. The guides are preferably shogged in one direction by a Dawson wheel or cam, and in the reverse direction by a spring. Each of the guides 36 .. 37a preferably comprises a pair of members, a fixed part A, and a part B movable under pattern control longitudinally of the part A. The part B serves to supply yarns to the additional needles selected for fashioning, and when brought into register with the part A may supply splicing yarns, e.g. for the toe, heel or high splice. The auxiliary guide 38 also comprises two sections 112, 113 slidably mounted so that the suture yarns may be fed to the outside needles forming fashioned parts of the fabric. An electrically operated stop motion may be provided, actuated upon breakage of the yarn fed from any of the supply bobbins.
