May 12, 1930, No. 14516. [Class 75 (iii).] Electric ignition means for gas burners is controlled by an electric switch which forms part of and is operable by a hand - control member which is joined to the gas cock so as to operate the latter by a wire or wires. In the form shown in Fig. 1, a shaft 1 is connected by a pin-and-slot means 9 to a sleeve 4, so that when the shaft is rotated it moves forwardly in the sleeve at first and presses the springy contact 11 against the contact 12. Further movement of the shaft then causes the sleeve 4 and a lever attached to it to rotate, so pulling the wire 8 to open the gas cock. When this is done, the shaft is released and is moved back, as far as the pin-and-slot means allow it, by the spring 11, so breaking the electric circuit. In another form the sleeve is dispensed with and the lever which moves the wires is attached directly to the shaft, which has a limited degree of axial movement so that it can be pushed in to complete the electric circuit and then rotated to actuate the gas cock. In the form shown in Fig. 6, a tumbler knob 2a is mounted in supports 17 by pins 16, the bearings 18 for which are elongated, the pins being kept at one end of the bearings by the pressure of the spring contact 11a. The tumbler, when actuated, moves first bodily downwards to make the filament circuit, and then rotates so that the toothed quadrant 19 which it carries moves the rack 20 which pushes and pulls the wire 8. When the tumbler is released the spring contact 11a moves it to break the circuit. Filaments of substances such as platinum, palladium, tantalum, &c. having a catalytic action, or of other substances, may be employed.
