[Class 106 (iii).] Relates to group speed signalling apparatus of the kind described in Specifications 207,650 and 262,725, [both in Class 106 (iii), Fares &c.], having balls or other rotating bodies such as cylinders, discs, ovoides, &c., so coloured as to appear differently when rotating and when at rest, and comprises means for registering distance run by vehicles or revolutions performed by machines at speeds above a particular speed by driving a counter directly by the ball. In the apparatus shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the rotating shaft 3 rotates through the arms 24 the sliding member 6 and the attached members 5, 7 supporting at 8 the flange 9 of the ball n. The shaft also rotates the weights 12 which under increase of speed of shaft 3 move outwards thus pulling down the sliding member 6 and members 7 allowing the ball n to fall until at a predetermined speed, fixed by the adjustment 19, the collar 10 contacts with the support 11, the supports 8 no longer contact with the flange 9 and the bell n stops rotating by friction between members 10, 11. Stoppage of rotation of the ball causes the distance counter 1 mounted on the ball n to be operated through the member 4 actuating the operating member 2 of the counter and the circuit of the lamp 14, to be broken when the supports 8 go out of contact with the flange 9. Whilst the ball is rotating the circuit of the lamp 14 is made through the battery 20, conductor passing through insulated tube in shaft 3, spring contact on member 2, lamp 14 conductor 22, ball n insulated by discs 16, 17, 29, flange 9, support 8, general mass of apparatus to support 11 and battery 20 to give a light which appears intermittent by shining through a hole 15 in a box 13 rotating with the ball n. A counter 27 is actuated through gearing 26 to register total distance travelled by vehicle or total revolutions of machine. In a second type of apparatus, i.e. with the ball n rotating at excess speed, the counter 1 can be actuated by fixing the member 4 to a fixed point of the apparatus, e.g. a rod passing through the shaft 3 and attached to bottom of the support 11, or by fixing the counter 1 to a fixed spindle 28 of the apparatus and the member 2 directly to the ball n as shown in Fig. 5 where the apparatus is shown applied to a small mill 37 driven by liquid or gaseous fluid. The ball n can be operated by controlling by means of a lever the horizontal members 5 so that the members 7 rise when sliding member 6 falls and vice versa. The supports 8, instead of being applied to the flange 9, can be applied to any other point of the ball, e.g. to the disc 23 or to a disc fixed on the collar 18 as in Specifications 207,650 and 262,725. In the apparatus shown in Fig. 6 the box 36 is fitted to the vehicle or machine and the ball n is practically a disc, the lower face of which has a flange on which the masses 12 act. The counter 1 is actuated through the groove 30, belt 32, and pulley 31, and the counter 27 through the pulleys 33, 34 and belt 35. The regulating member of the spring 25 is underneath.
