Abstract

<PICT:0354735/III/1> <PICT:0354735/III/2> In the production of oxygen and hydrogen from steam or in the oxidation of sulphur dioxide to trioxide, or in the production of hydrocyanic acid by means of electric discharges, the current of gas or vapour is led to the cylindrical or slightly conical electric discharge space L through an annular passage R coaxial with the discharge between the electrodes E, E<1>. The passage is formed by smooth unbroken surfaces F, arranged in Fig. 1 at right-angles to the discharge and having an area at least ten times that of the cross section of the discharge space. In modifications, the surfaces F are of straight or curved conical formation. In Fig. 4, a number of passages R of curved conical form are provided. Using the furnace of Fig. 4 for the production of nitric acid from air, the yield is 75 to 76 gms. per kilowatt hour. Specification 294,494, [Class 1 (ii), Inorganic compounds, other than &c.], is referred to.ALSO:<PICT:0354735/IV/1> <PICT:0354735/IV/2> In the treatment of methane and its homologues with electric discharges to produce acetylene and other unsaturated hydrocarbons, the current of gas is led to the cylindrical or slightly conical electric discharge space L through an annular passage R co-axial with the discharge between the electrodes E, E1, whereby the secondary vortices in the gas current are removed. The passage is formed by smooth unbroken surfaces F, arranged in Fig. 1 at right-angles to the discharge and having an area at least ten times that of the cross section of the discharge space. In modifications the surfaces F are of straight or curved conical formation. In Fig. 4 a number of passages R of curved conical form are provided. In the production of acetylene from methane the yield is increased by 17,3 per cent by using the apparatus described. When passing a gas obtained from the destructive hydrogenation of coal and containing 30 per cent of methane through the furnace of Fig. 1 at 200 metres per second using an arc at 3000 volts, the acetylene yield is 10 per cent. Specification 294,494, [Class 2 (i), Acetylene], is referred to.
