Gases, treating with electric discharge. - The gases leaving the reaction zone are separated into portions rich and poor in reaction products by separately withdrawing different zones of the reaction gases. In Fig. 1 methane is introduced at the lower end and the gas removed by the pipe 4 contains 4 to 6 per cent acetylene. Without such pipe a gas containing 2.5 per cent acetylene would pass off through the outlet. 3. In Fig. 2 a chamber 7 surrounds fine lateral openings 6 in the furnace wall. If methane is introduced the gas withdrawn at 3 contains a high percentage of acetylene and the gas removed at 7 is practically free from acetylene. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) refers to the production of nitrogen oxides with the use of a flat arc and also to an axially arranged inlet pipe. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
