Abstract

354,726. Refrigerating. BOVING, J. O., Victoria Station House, Victoria Street, London. May 12, 1930, No. 14559. [Class 29.] Absorption machines.-The generator-absorber a of a reversing absorption or adsorption system is immersed in a liquid through which heat is transmitted during the generating period, and the displacement of the liquid due to the heating opens a valve g to permit the liquid to circulate by gravity through a cooling device e and back to the jacket of the generator-absorber, where it serves as the cooling medium during the absorption period. The generator-absorber is preferably annular and heated by a central flue, and the condenser k may be located in the liquid in the cooler e, which is gilled for air cooling. The valve g is actuated by a bellows f which moves with the change of pressure of liquid in the cooler and also serves to actuate a control i for the heat supply to the burner &c. h. In a system having two generator-absorbers working in opposite phases a common cooling device e may be employed. Preferably the bellows acts through a trip gear, as shown for a duplex system in Fig. 4, being fitted with a pawl u normally drawn by a spring u<1> towards a stop u<2> and adapted to advance a ratchet v of a switch or gas cock for the two heaters. The bellows is also connected with a spring-centred pawl w within the liquid space of the cooler adapted to engage one of two notches in a rocking disc x to close one valve g<1> and open the other valve g<2> of the cooling liquid systems. The evaporator, p Fig. 1, is arranged within a closed heat-insulated chamber l containing a condensible heat-transfer fluid which circulates in a closed cycle through a coil s in a brine tank o. The heat supply to the generator may also be controlled by a thermostat t, Fig. 1, in the refrigerating chamber n. The invention may be applied to systems using solid absorbents such as calcium chloride for sulphur dioxide or other refrigerant, and to charcoal or silica gel adsorption systems. Or a hydroxide and alcohol or water and ammonia may be used.
