354,528. Grinding. STOCK & CO., SPIRALBOHRERWERKZEUG-UND MASCHINENFABRIK AKT.-GES., R., Marienfelde, Berlin. July 23, 1930, No. 22225. Convention date, Aug. 27,1929. [Class 60.] Twist drills, sharpening ;trueing rotating tools.-A machine for grinding the rear of the cutting-edges or lips of twist drills consists of a grinding- wheel 6 of truncated conical form driven by an electric motor contained in a housing 4, or by other means, which is angularly adjustable about a pin 7 on a slide 3 movable on the frame of the machine by a rack 8 and a quadrant 9 operated by a hand-lever 11. The drill is mounted on a bracket 12 adjustable vertically on the frame 1 by a screw 14 and carrying a plate 16 movable by a wheel 17 in a direction at right-angles to the movement of the slide 3. On the plate 16 is an intermediate rotatably adjustable plate, on which are mounted two gripping devices 18, 19 engaging the drill, and slidable towards and from the drill at an adjustable angle, by means of links 24, 25 pivoted to a double-armed lever 26 carried by a spindle 27. The spindle is rotatable in a housing 28 and carries a quick-pitch screw 29 engaged by a nut 30 normally held up by a spring 32, so as to close the devices 18, 19 on to the drill, but movable downwards, to rotate the spindle 27 to free the drill, by means of a pedal 44. The point of the drill is located by an adjustable abutment 20, and the drill is adjusted so that its edge lies parallel to the movement of the slide 3, the grinding being performed by the edge of the wheel 6, the plane of which lies at an angle to the direction of movement. The shank end of the drill is supported by a centre 23 adjustable along an arm 21. The wheel 6 is trued by a diamond 43 carried by a slide 42 movable on a casing formed on a sleeve 36, angularly adjustable in the end of an arm 33, which may be swung about a pivot 34 on the plate 16 to 'the operative or inoperative position. The slide 42 is movable by means of a spiral rib 40 on the outer flat face of a bead 41 on a shaft 38 rotatable by a hand-wheel 39.
