Abstract
354,383. Typewriters. HESS, E. B., 645, East Marks Street, Orlando, Florida, and ROYAL TYPEWRITER CO., Inc., 316, Broadway, New York, both in U.S.A. May 9, 1930, No. 14392. [Class 100 (iv).] Type-lever actions ; types ; hammer-impression arrangement.-Type-blocks mounted on the typelevers are moved for impression by means operated by the key-levers. In the action shown in Fig. 1, type-levers 7 are pivotally suspended from a segment 4, each type-lever being provided with a sliding type-block 44 and being connected to a toggle 11, 13 which is connected by a yielding link 21 to a key-lever 18. The lower part of the link can slide in an adjustable sleeve 22 on the upper part, and has a head resting on a spring. An impression plunger 26, movable in a guide 24 in the top plate 3. is connected to a toggle 27, 29 which abuts on a block 31 and is connected bv a link 36 to an arm 38 on a universal bail 41 operated by the key-levers. The printing point is visible when the impression plunger is in normal position. Depression of any key-lever straightens the associated toggle 11, 13 and thereby moves the type-lever into the horizontal position, and on further depression of the key-lever the toggle 27, 29 is straightened and the impression plunger moves the type-block for impression. On release of the keylever, the action is returned by means of springs 48, 23, 13<1>. Impression is adjusted by means of a knob 33 carried by a rod 32 which engages the block 31 and is threaded into the top plate, a pointer 34 on the knob being arranged over a dial. Pads 17, 42, 142 limit the movements of the toggles and type-levers. In a modified action, the heel of each type-lever is connected by a yielding link, an intermediate lever, and another link to the keylever, and the universal bail rocks an arm into position for supporting the type-lever in the horizontal position. The type-block 44 may slide in a housing 46, Fig. 6, on the type-lever and engage a returning-spring 45 which is inserted in recesses in the type-block and type-lever, the arrangement permitting of detachment of the type-block and spring. The housing may be angularly adjustable on the type-lever. The type-block 50 shown in Fig. 9 is attached to a plate 52 by rods 51 guided in a web 53 on the type-lever, a returning-spring 54 being arranged between the web and plate. The rods may be arranged to engage grooves in the impression plunger, the plate being omitted. Specifications 20519/91 and 3040/92, [both in Clasps 100, Printing, Letterpress &c.], are referred to. Aligning for impression.-The impression plunger 26, Fig. 1, may have a projection 73, Fig. 14, for engaging the type-block 44, and a wall 72 for engaging the type-block housing 46 to align the types. The type-levers 7, Fig. 1, may have projections for engaging the front of the usual aligning-fork.
