Abstract

354,222. Making paper and like bags ; packeting cigarettes. TRIGGS, W. W., 57, Lincoln's Inn Fields, London.-(American Machine & Foundry Co. ; 511, 5th Avenue, New York, U.S.A.) March 31, 1930, No. 10229. [Classes 94 (i) and 94 (ii).] Open-ended packets for cigarettes are formed by partially wrapping a first sheet of foil in trough formation about a mandrel, applying a second sheet and folding down the side flaps of both inner and outer sheets as units, and thereafter folding in the overhanging ends to complete the container. Foil F is fed by rollers 18 through guides 19 and severed by a knife 20, the cut sheet being held against the wall of one of series of mandrels 11 by a plate 14. The mandrels are mounted on an intermittently rotating turret 10, and, on arrival at position B, rods 21' and brushes 22 turn up the sides of the foil, while a folder 24 turns up the forward end edge. A sheet P of paper is fed by a transfer member 25 into a position slightly offset with regard to that of the foil. Adhesive is' applied to the edge of the sheet P by any suitable means. During the next intermittent movement, the paper is folded up by plates 26, and at the next halt, at position C, plates 31, 32 turn down the sides on to the mandrel, and a clamping strip 15 moves into position to hold the seam until the adhesive is dry. Owing to the sheet P being offset, the seam of the inner sheet is concealed. At station D, folders 33, 34, 36 complete the end folding. An open-ended packet has now been formed, and, on arrival at station A a charge C, Figs. 1 and 2, of cigarettes is inserted by a plunger 38, which continues its motion to push the packet off the mandrel and to remain as a backing for the ensuing folding operations at stations B, C, D, being again withdrawn before arriving back at station A.
