[Class 100 (iv).] Hammer-impression arrangements; column-printing arrangements.-The items set up or the totals accumulated in a calculating machine may be recorded supplementarily on a card or sheet inserted in a slide adapted to be column-spaced by the usual travelling carriage of the machine. The record may consist of partly printed and partly perforated matter and the recording-mechanism may be arranged as an attachment or as a built-in unit. The invention is illustrated as applied to an Ellis machine, described in Specification 28253/08, [Class 100, Printing, Letterpress &c.]. The attachment 1 is screwed to the back of the machine and is provided with an operating shaft 17 adapted to be rocked from the main shaft 601 of the machine by a link 19 pin-and-slot coupled to the lever 651 at 19<1> and capable of disablement by manipulation of a finger-lever 101. Card-feeding. Behind a card hopper 14 is a sliding open frame 12 reciprocated by a link 24 from a shaft 22 rocked from the shaft 17. At each reciprocation a card is carried forward to a table 7 where it lies beneath the punching and printing members. The shaft 17 rocks shaft 22 through a slotted link 20 and at the end of the forward stroke an arm 26 fast to shaft 22 depresses and is then held by a latch 27 so that the shaft 17 returns to normal without affecting shaft 22 and the feedslide. When all printing and punching operations are completed the carriage or the operator, through lever 959, rocks the latch to free the shaft 22, whereupon the slide returns and the card is drawn by a bar 13 of the slide through an opening into the receptacle 8. Printing-mechanism. Slides 42, 71 carrying the type 43 and punches 72 are coupled by levers 40 and links 35 with the corresponding type-setting devices 260 of the calculating-machine. When the machine is operated, the types are struck to print on the card by hammers 49 tripped by a universal latch 53 operated by a bail 52. The hammers are fitted with spring-controlled pivoted abutment arms 50 to engage the bail and thus permit impression by momentum. Eliminating zero-printing. Each hammer is normally held by a latch 48 released by a projection on the corresponding link 41 when the typebar is moved from zero position. To prevent printing of insignificant zeros the latches overlap successively at 48a. Ink-ribbon mechanism. The ink-ribbon 55 is wound alternately on spools 57, 58 of which spool 57 is frictionally driven by a ratchet and pawl 60 and link 61 from the operating shaft 17. The lower spool 58 is positively rotated by a lever 65 which carries an automatically reversible pawl 68 controlled by a spring 69 and engaging a ratchet wheel 64 secured to the spool. Column-spacing. When a card has been fed into receptive position it lies between depressible bevelled stops 87 on a rectangular frame 86, Fig. 8, adapted to be coupled with the main carriage so as to shift the card from column to column. The frame is extended at 89 to carry a pair of spring- controlled pawls 91, 92. Pawl 92 has a turned end to bear on the edge of a fixed rail 95 provided near its extremities with notches normally masked by spring-controlled arms 96. The other pawl 91 at one end engages beneath pawl 92 and at the other co-operates with a pair of bevelled dogs 103 carried by a slotted bar 98 adjustably attached to the carriage at 100, 99. As the carriage moves to the right, Fig. 8, pawl 91 is depressed by a dog so that pawl 92 is raised from a notch which is then covered by the masking arm. The pawl 91 is received between the dogs so that now the frame 86 and card move with the carriage. At the end of this column shifting pawl 92 pushes aside the other masking arm and enters the notch whereupon the other dog 103 yields to uncouple the frame from the carriage.
