Abstract

In the downward dry spinning of artificial threads, filaments, &c., the whole of the evaporative atmosphere is introduced into the cell or chamber at the region of and on one side of the extrusion nozzle, while the atmosphere is withdrawn either wholly or partly on the opposite side of the cell, so as to cause the atmosphere to move across the face of the nozzle. When the whole of the atmosphere is withdrawn at the region of the nozzle, the cell or chamber may be comparatively short, say, of one foot in height; if, however, a part only of the atmosphere is withdrawn at this point, then the remainder is caused to pass downwards with the filaments, and is withdrawn at a point or points lower down the cell, and in this case the cell may be several feet in height. To assist in causing the atmosphere to move across the face of the nozzle, a small horizontal baffle may be provided just below the point at which the atmosphere enters.
