[Class 100 (iv).] Strip-controlled wave-actuated driving-mechanism. -A code strip 1, comprising transparent spots on a black ground, is passed between a light source 3 and a light-sensitive cell 2 ; the current impulses, amplified at 16, are fed to a distributer 13, 14 of the usual type, and actuate the magnets 28 of a decoding typewriter. A shaft 4, driven by a motor 40, feeds the strip 1 and is connected by a differential gear 5 to the shaft 15 of the distributer 13, 14. To obtain synchronism between the passage of the signals recorded and the passage of the brushes over the contacts of the distributer, the currents from the cell 2 pass to a brush 11 in contact with a disc 10 having three contacts and thence to the distributer through relay 7, no relay, or relay 8 according as the shaft 15 is ahead of, even with, or behind the signal impulses. The relay 7 or 8 operates to displace the crown 6 of the differential and so alter the speed of shaft 15. Since disc 10 rotates faster than the shaft 15, this correction may be made at every impulse. To attain initial synchronism, one letter is sent several times and the crown 6 operated, e.g. by hand until this letter is printed.
