Abstract

352,463. Directive wireless signalling. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd., Marconi House, Strand, London, and WOODS, F., 8, Atwood Avenue, Richmond, Surrey. April 8, 1930, No. 11177. [Class 40 (v).] In a Bellini-Tosi system designed to operate over a plurality of wave-length ranges, loading reactances are used in conjunction with the frame circuits in such a way that when the system is being used on any one range, the resonance frequency of the aerial system is within another range. As shown, in an arrangement having two wavelength ranges, the fixed loops AF, PS feed fixed goniometer coils A1, F1 and P1, S1 respectively and the search coil SC is in circuit with a tuning condenser SCC and coils CCA1 and AC, the former of which is coupled to a coil CCA connected to an open aerial OA and earth through a reversing switch RS, the latter being coupled to a coil AC1 leading to the amplifier. Fixed and variable loading capacities FC and VC are adapted to be switched across the goniometer coils for one wavelength range by an earthed rod SL which also operates the switch RS and the rangechanging switch of the amplifier. The reversal of the cardioid diagram which would take place on changing from one range to the other is avoided by the operation of switch RS. Other phasereversing means may alternatively be employed or the search coil circuit or an intermediate circuit may be rendered aperiodic on one of the ranges by short-circuiting the condenser SCC.
