Abstract
351,760. Centrifugal fans. STURTEVANT CO., B. F., 6, Damon Street, Hyde Park, Boston, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Hagen, H. F. ; Dedham, Massachusetts, U.S.A.) July 14, 1930, No. 21285. Convention date, Oct. 31, 1929. [Class 110 (i).] A centrifugal fan is provided with means for controlling the flow of fluid through the fan, and a byepass which permits the passage of fluid from inlet to outlet round the control means. An induced draught fan connected to a stack has blades 6 on a shaft 4 in a casing with an outlet 10 and an inlet chamber 8 at each end. Control of the flow is obtained by vanes 12 in the inlet chambers ; these vanes can be adjusted to vary the spin velocity of the entering gas. The plate 14 between each inlet chamber 8 and the fan chamber is provided with a byepass opening 16 normally closed by a damper 18 secured to a spindle 24 journalled in bearings 26, 28. A counterweight 34 is adjusted so that the damper swings to its open position when the pressure in the inlet is slightly higher than that in the outlet. Stops 38 on arms 40 limit the movement of the damper. During normal operation the damper remains closed ; with a light load, the vanes 12 are adjusted and may be entirely closed so that the entering gas passes through the leakage spaces. With still lighter loads the fan is shut down, and if the passage through the vanes 12, whether they be open or shut, is not sufficiently large, the damper 18 will open and gas will pass directly from the inlet 8 to the outlet 10 and the stack.
