Abstract
351,556. Fluid-friction brakes. JENKINS, C. H., Hay, Washington, U.S.A. March 28, 1930, No. 9951. [Class 103 (i).] Relates to automobile hydraulic brake mechanism of the kind employing duplex gearpumps 2, 3 and 2, 4 for circulating the braking fluid while the brakes are not applied, retardation of the movement of the fluid resulting in a retardation of the gear-pumps and driving shaft. The mechanism comprises a gear-case 6 and a fluid reservoir 19 having triangular groups of ports 23, 24, Fig. 6, leading to the gearcase and controlled by slide-valves 25, 26 of the piston type movable in cylindrical housings in the valve chambers 21, 22. Two exterior crossed ducts 11, 12 are also provided, each having an upper port and a lower port opening into the gearcase on opposite sides of the driving shaft 1 to which the main gear 2 is fixed. Normally, when the shaft 1 is rotating in a clockwise direction, Fig. 2, both valves 25, 26, Fig. 6, are open and the fluid circulates in the reservoir through the valve 26 and port 18 to the gear-case, where some fluid is carried by the gear 2 to the port 17 and the remainder by the gear 3 to a space 141 from which it is led through the duct 11 to join the fluid passing through the port 17. The combined fluid then passes through the valve 25 back into the reservoir. When the rotation of the shaft 1 is anti clockwise the circulation is reversed. Gradual or sudden retardation of the shaft 1 when rotating clockwise is effected by partially or wholly closing the valve 25 and, when rotating anticlockwise, by the valve 26. The valves are jointly manipulated by a manually operable crank 32<1>, Fig. 5, connected to an arm 33, Fig. 6, which operates a link 32 joining the ends of valve levers 28, 29, each pivoted at 30 to a fixed bracket and at 31 to the valve. A pipe leading from the space between the gears and the case 6 to the oil reservoir prevents any pressure between the gears and the case due to leakage of the fluid past the gear teeth.
