351,221. Electromagnetic switches ; rocking-bar controllers. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London.-(Assignees of Goff, R. W. ; 114, North Dean Street, Schenectady, New York, U.S.A.) June 6, 1930, No. 17644. Convention date, June 8, 1929. [Classes 38 (iii) and 38 (v).] Switches 12, 13 controlling armature resistance are closed sequentially by the rotation of a shaft 22 acting through mutilated tooth gearing 51, 511. The teeth of this gearing are so shaped that the switches are locked in their " closed " position or in both their closed and open positions. Upon the operation of a " start pushbutton, a solenoid 10 is energized, lifting its core 18 and immediately closing a main switch 11 which connects the motor to the line. At the same time a spring 41 is compressed so that the shaft 22 rotates slowly under the influence of retarding mechanism 14. Attached to the shaft 22 is a gear member 51, Fig. 6, which gears with teeth 58, 59, 60, on the movable switch member 50 and so closes the switch. In the closed positions a cylindrical part 63 on the element 51 rests between the teeth 58, 60, and at the end of the tooth 59 which is shorter than the others, so that the switch is locked. If the switch is to be locked in its open position as well, additional teeth 70, 71, 72 are added. Any desired number of switches are sequentially operated in this manner by arranging the gear elements 51 of each in their proper positions on the shaft 22.
