Abstract
Thiuram monosulphides are manufactured by the action of phosgene on a salt of a dithiocarbamic acid disubstituted on the nitrogen atom either symmetrically or asymmetrically. In examples, phosgene is caused to react upon: (1) the sodium salt of dimethyldithiocarbamic acid (produced in situ by the action of carbon disulphide and caustic soda on dimethylamine), yielding tetramethylthiuram monosulphide; (2) the ammonium salt of the dithiocarbamic acid prepared from piperidine and carbon disulphide, which yields dipentamethylenethiuram monosulphide; (3) the dithiocarbamate prepared by the action of carbon disulphide and caustic soda on hexahydroethylaniline. The process is applicable to salts (including salts with organic bases) of dithiocarbamic acids derived from any secondary organic base, those from diethylamine, methylethylamine, dibutylamine, dibenzylamine, methylaniline, dicyclohexylamine, perhydrocarbazole and morpholine being specified as additional starting materials.
