Abstract
350,301. Hand tools for planting seeds, extracting weeds, and working soil. MAXTED, A. H., 101, Queen's Road, Watford, Hertfordshire. July 19, 1930, No. 21866. [Class 6 (ii).] A combined weed extractor and seed or soil depositor comprises a weed receptacle 1 having a snout end 3 adapted to be pressed into the ground and detach a weed for subsequent passage up the receptacle 1, and a container 2 for seeds, soil, or both, having means such as a cover 9 operated by a spring-urged rod 10 for controlling the delivery of the seeds or soil into the cavity formed by extracting the weed. The weed receptacle 1 is provided internally with a tapered tubular member 5 axially movable and urged down by springs 6 so that its lower end normally abuts against a flange 4 near the snout end 3. By moving upwards each time a clot of earth enters the receptacle 1, and subsequently moving down under the action of the springs, the member 5 facilitates the entry of weed-containing earth into, and also its passage up, the receptacle 1. The springs may be protected by housings 8, 13, and the springs 6 mounted on rods 7. A step 16 and handles may be provided for facilitating operation, and the container 2 may be closed by a cover 14.
