Abstract

350,219. Control of motors ; drum controllers. IGRANIC ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., 147, Queen Victoria Street, London.- (Cutler-Hammer Manufacturing Co. ; Milwaukee, Wisconsin, U.S.A.) May 28, 1930, No. 16443. [Class 38 (iii).] Travelling to predetermined limits.-In driving mechanism in which a motor drives an object to or between limits through a driving connection which is quickly interrupted upon a given electrical condition in the motor, automatic means are provided to prevent the interruption except during the final movement of the object into a limit. As shown in Fig. 1 a motor 4 drives a valve through sun-and-planet gearing 3, when the outer ring 3c is looked by a latch 7. When a drum controller 13 is moved to its " close" position the motor is fed through coils 32a, 33a of relays 32, 33, and at the same time a restraining coil 32b is energized through a limit switch 11. The relay 32 thus remains closed irrespective of the motor current, and energizes coils 10, 15, the former causing the latch 7 to lock the ring gear 3c with a hammer blow and the latter causing a relay 14 to lock the controller in its " close " position. When the valve is closed the limit switch 11 is opened, and the coil 32b de-energized so that the excessive current in the coil 32a due to the stalling of the motor is able to open the relay 32. The coils 15, 10 are consequently de-energized so that the driving connection between the motor and the valve is interrupted, and the controller drum returns to its " off " position. When the controller , 5 is moved to its " open " position the operation is the same except that a limit switch 12 and the relay 33 are actuated. Indicating lamps S1, S2 are provided. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the coils 15, 10 are energized when the motor speed is above a certain value, the limit switches 11, 12 operating on a relay which places resistance in series and in parallel with the motor armature so that the speed of the motor is reduced and the coils 10, 15 de-energized.
