Abstract

349,757. Recording sound. SOC. FRANCAISE CINECHROMATIQUE(PROCEDES R. BERTHON), 24, Rue de la Pepiniere, Paris. May 8, 1930, No. 14229. Convention date, May 10, 1929. [Class 40 (ii).] Sound is recorded on a travelling transparent support coated with an opaque plastic material by a stylus or scraper of definite width which is vibrated transversely to the movement of the support by a diaphragm influenced by the sounds or electro - magnetically by sound currents. A photographic print is then made from the record on to a separate carrier or on to a carrier receiving black and white or coloured pictures, and the sound is reproduced photo-electrically by known means. The Figure shows a film A of celluloid, viscose, &c., coated with an opaque layer of a substance of wax consistency or of lampblack which is removed by a stylus or scraper B vibrated by a sound-influenced diaphragm C to form a wavy trace on the travelling film. This trace is used as a negative, and a positive is produced therefrom by masking the edge of the trace and copying photographically by contact printing or projection on to another film which may carry pictures or may be traversed in synchronism with a picture film during reproduction by photoelectric means.
