Abstract

Motor fuels are rendered antiknocking by adding thereto a solid or liquid carbon compound in which at least one carbon atom is bivalent. Such compounds comprise (1) organo-metallo-cyanide derivatives, including the corresponding isocyanides, thiocyanates, isothiocyanates, cyanates, and isocyanates, which compounds are less volatile than the fuel, (2) organic isonitriles, and (3) compounds of the type <FORM:0349475/III/1> for example di-iodo-acetylidene, cyanogen, iodide, and the tautomeric form of ketenes <FORM:0349475/III/2> Suitable compounds of the class (1) comprise, (a) esters of metallo-cyanic acids such as alkyl or aryl esters of ferrocyanic acid or of the corresponding nickel, lead, cobalt, thallium, osmium, molybdenum, chromium, vanadium or uranium cyanic acids, (b) salts of such metallocyanic acids with organic bases, including hetero- and carbocylic bases such as aniline or polynuclear bases, (c) organic delivatives of cyanogen complexes of the type -- M(CN)6 in which the metal is one of those specified in (a), for example organic nitro prussides or carboxyl cyanides, (d) cyanides of metalloids such as selenium and tellurium, or organic derivatives containing the -- SeCN group. For example, a motor fuel consisting of kerosene, "cracked" gasoline, benzine, alcohol or mixtures of these, is mixed with a small amount of (a) tetraamyl or -phenyl ferrocyanide, or (b) tetra-anilino nickelocyanide or (d) dicyandiselenide, or phenyl selenocyanate, or its substitution derivatives, e.g. amino phenyl selenocyanate, or the corresponding diseleno-compounds, e.g. <FORM:0349475/III/3> where X is an organic or inorganic radical, or (e) isobutyl isonitrile. A solvent for such compounds, miscible with the motor fuel may be added e.g. amyl or isopropyl alcohol or cyclohexanol.
