Abstract

<PICT:0349204/III/1> The quality of a gas which is being supplied for a manufacturing operation is determined by drawing it through a vessel which is included in a high frequency electric circuit the current in which is varied by the presence of impurities in the gas and is read on a meter which may be a recording instrument. As shown, for example in testing argon supplied to electric lamps, the gas supply is drawn through tubes 33, 34 in a container 29 which has an enveloping electrode 28 connected in the high voltage secondary circuit 17 of an oscillation generator. The anodes of vacuum tubes 18, 19 are connected in parallel to coils 14, 15 tuned by condensers 22, 23, the filament and plate supplies being obtained from power transformer secondaries 13, 12. A common grid circuit includes a leak 25, coupling coil 16, and condenser 32 which is provided for maintaining the same measuring range with different vacuum tubes. The measuring instrument 27 is connected with the centre tappings of coils 12, 13 and earth in order to keep high potentials away from its terminals. Condensers 20, 21 are provided for preventing high frequency oscillations reaching the power transformer. In a modification, the electrode 28 is earthed and high frequency currents are supplied to a filament within the container 29. Specification 310,339, [Class 37, Electricity, Measuring &c.], is referred to.
