Abstract

<PICT:0347813/III/1> <PICT:0347813/III/2> An apparatus for closing the ends of cartons of the kind in which each end has two side flaps which are folded inwards on each other and two end-flaps which are pasted or glued and folded on to the already folded flaps, is arranged for closing one end of the empty carton by placing it on one of two supports 3, 4, Figs. 1 and 2, the two end-flaps resting on platforms 28, and traversing across these flaps by hand a pasting roller 5 mounted pivotally in arms 11, which are connected by a hand-rail 13 and pivoted at their other ends to pivoted arms 14 counterweighted at 24 and provided with a member 19 slotted at 21 to engage a pin 22 so as to restrict the movement. Adhesive is supplied to the roller 5 from a continuously-rotated roller 23 supplied with paste from a receptacle 26. The support 3 or 4 with its platforms 28 is then moved by sliding their base 8 along a track 9 by means of a handle 36 so that the carton comes under one of two hand-operated presses 6, 7, the flaps being kept down during the movement by plates 29. Operation of the press handle 35 then consolidates the joint. A second machine is arranged for closing the other end of the carton when it is filled, the carton standing on an adjustable platform and having its side-flaps pasted by a roller 5 as before, but the presses being omitted. The filled carton is then removed and placed in a machine for conveying it to a delivery point while pressure is being applied to the end of the carton.
