Abstract

347,759. Treating road surfaces. JOHNSTON, J. T. M., London House, Crutched Friars, London. Feb. 4, 1930, No. 3787. [Class 107.] In apparatus for the surface treatment of roads comprising a tar or like delivery device and a plurality of brushing elements mounted on vertically rotating shafts driven from a road wheel of the vehicle carrying the apparatus, the said elements each consist of a plurality of brushes or the like extending radially from the axis of rotation and spaced apart in their path of circular motion over the road. According to one construction, tar is delivered to a road by nozzles 13, Fig. 1, from a cauldron 10 which is mounted on a chassis 11 carried by wheels 12. The chassis has a rearward extension 15 carrying bearings 26 in which runs a vertical shaft 25. The shaft is driven by a shaft 19 which is coupled by a chain to a sprocket 20 on the wheel 12. The lower end of the shaft 25 is splined and carries a spider 28 having radial limbs 29 upon each of which is mounted an arm 31. To an extension 32 of each arm is pivoted a brush carrier 33 resiliently connected to arms 35 of the extension by springs 34. Brushes 36 are slidably mounted in the carriers and are secured in any desired position by bolts 37. In order to increase the pressure of the brushes on the road surface, springs may be provided between the limbs 29 and the arms 31. Means for lifting the brushes clear of the road comprises a striking plate 38, Fig. 3, in which the spider 28 is free to rotate, connected to rods 39 which extend upwardly through a framework 16 and are connected by a bar 40. The bar 40 is raised or lowered by a lever 41 actuated by a handle 43 and is held in the raised or lowered position by its engagement with abutments 44, 45 of a resiliently mounted retaining lever 46. In the preferred construction, two or more vertical shafts are employed the shafts rotating in the same or opposite directions and the paths thereof overlapping. A light squeegee 49 may be used to finish the coating of bitumen or the like applied by the brushes.
