[Class 27.] Articles stored in piles; storage.-In a vending machine the packets A are supported on a carriage attached by a 'cable 6, Figs. 1 and 2, passing over a guide 6<1>, to a drum 8. When a shaft 15 is rotated by a handle, a crank 16 through a link 45 and ratchet drive rotates the drum to raise the pile, until the topmost article is clear of a front plate 55, which has a downwardly inclined delivery shelf 56. At the same time, a pin 17 on the crank 16 works in a slot 18 of a front bar 19 connecting two arms 20 which form the short arm of a bell-crank lever 20, 22. In a complete throw of the crank 16, the bell-crank lever moves a slider 36 from the front to the rear of the machine and back again, the slider moving between the sides 24, 24<1> of a pivoted frame which is held down on the packets by a catch 29<1> on a vertical rod 28 controlled bv a spring 35. The slider has mounted thereon an L-shaped presser 40 which is pressed down by a spring 41 to engage behind the topmost packet, raised as described, and push it off the pile for delivery. This delivering mechanism forms the subject-matter of Specification 347,572. The link 45 is connected to a rocker arm 46 having a driving pawl 47 for rotating the drum 8. The pawl is normally held out of engagement with ratched teeth 48 on the drum by a spring 50 until it is engaged by a cam 53 on the end of a rocker arm 34, which has a pin 33 engaging a slot 32 in a lateral extension of the rod 28. The thickness of the packet determines the movement of the rod 28 and thereby the position of the cam 53 so that the feed of the drum 8 at each actuation corresponds to the thickness of the packet. Reverse movement of the drum is prevented by a pawl 65, which is held out of action, when the machine is being refilled, by a rod 68. The rod 68 is held raised by a catch portion 68<1> hooking over a shoulder 29<11> on the catch 29<1>. The front plate 55 is adjustable in height to suit the packets by teeth 59 thereon engaging pins 57 on a bar 581, the plate 55 being frictionally held by a hump 62 on a rod 60 passing through the bar 58<1>.
