DISPENSING" Arrmrus.
Application filed September 15, 1923. Serial No. 662,870.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FELIX R. .FUQUAY, a citizen of the United States, residin at Durham, in the county of Durham and tate of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dispensing Apparatus, of which the following is a specificatiomreferexice being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates-to dispensing'apparatus and has relation more particularly to a device ofthis general character under check control and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character having novel and improved means whereby upon deposit of a requisite check-or coin an article may be delivered.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character having novel and improved means whereby after a proper check or coin has been deposited, the same cannot be released until after the completion of the requisite operation to efi'ect an article delivery.
The invention consists in the details'of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my im proved dispensing apparatus whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth. 1
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better'understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view in perspective illustratinga dispensing apparatus constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention;
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary vertical sectional view taken through the lower portion of the device as I illustrated in Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a detailed sectional view taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Figure 2;
Figure 4 is a view partly in topplan and partly in section illustrating in detail certain features of the check controlled mechanism as herein disclosed;
Figure 5 is a view similar to Figure 4 but showing certain of the parts in a second position;
Figure 6 is a fragmentary view in perspectlve of the movable or swinging member comprised in the check controlled mechanism proper; I
Figure 7 is a fragmentary view in perspective of one of the article delivering slides as herein comprised; a
Figure 8 is a view in perspective of one of the guide plates herein employed.
As disclosed in the accompanying'drawings, C denotes a cabinet of requisite dimensions and which has its lower forward portion stepped to provide the vertically spaced tables or shelves 1 and 2. The riser 3 be-- tween the tables or shelves 1 and2 is herein disclosed as provided with a plurality of discharge openings 4, each having extending therethrough a chute 5 underlying the table or shelf 2 and adaptedto receive an article discharged from a compartment 6 comprised in the cabinet structure C.
In the present embodiment of my invention I disclosethe use of two compartments 6 and of a type to have arranged therein a supply of handkerchief packages. By the a trackwayvor guide 9 carried by each side:
wall of the cabinet C. In order that the lowermost package will not pass entirely through the opening 7 when the slide 8 is in its retracted or lowered position a cross member 10 is arranged within'the cabinet C below but immediately adjacent to the slide 8, and underlying the opening-7 when. said slide is in its normal position. As the slide is moved forwardly, the lowermost package will be delivered upon the adjacent chute '5 and delivered upon the-l'ower table or shelf 1 through the opening 4.
Rotatably supported by the side walls of the cabinet C below the slide 8 is a rock arm 12 provided directly below the slide 8 withthe oppositely directed rock arms 14 and 15,
the upper rock arm 14 being operatively lid engaged by the rod 16 or the like with the rear portion of the slide 8 so that upon rocking movement of the shaft 12 in one direction the slide 8 will be caused to move outwardly to efiect the desired delivery of the lowermost article-within the compartment 6. The slide 8, however, is maintained in its normal position by the retractible member 1?, herein disclosed as a coil spring, having one end portion secured, as at 18, to the slide 8 at a point in relatively close proximity to the inner end of the opening 7 while the opposite end portion of the member 17 is anchored, as at 19, to the rear wall of the cabinet C at a point below the slide 8.
.Each side wall of the cabinet 0 at a point below but immediately adjacent the table or shelf 1 is provided with a guideway or track 20 in which engages a slide 21 normally maintained at the limit of its forward movement by a 'retractible member 22. The member 22 as herein 'disclosed comprises a coil spring having one end por-' tion connected, as at 23, to the inner or rear extremity of the slide 21 and its opposite or forward end portion anchored, as at 2t, to a cross member 25 supported within the cabinet C. v
The forward end portion of the slide 21 is provided with a slot 26, which, with the slide 21 in its normal position, underlies a slot 27 in the table or shelf 1 and through which the requisite check or coinis adapted to be inserted. Secured to and depending from the forward end portion of the slide 21 and underlying the slot 26 thereof is a relatively short chute 28 having its lower and inner faces open. This chute 28 is adapted to receive the coin or check 29 when deposited throughtheslot 27. v
[A cross member 30 is arranged withinthe cabinet C and positioned below the slide 21 but immediately adjacent thereto, said member bridging the space between the trackwaysor guides 20. Pivotally connected, as at 31, with said cross member 30 for swinging movement in a horizontal direction is an elongated arm 32, said arm 32 being-of a length to have its outer or free end terminate immediately adjacent to the riser 33 below the table or shelf 1. The member 32 carries a runway 34 extending below the chute 28 and of predetermined length and which runway 34c serves to .initial y prevent the appliedicoin or check 29 passing downwardly and entirely through the chute 28. i
The inner marginal face of the member 32 extending along the runway 34 is provided with a series of inwardly facing ratchet teeth 35, the inclined face of the outer tooth roviding a cam a for a purpose to be ereinafter more particularly referred to.
The upper face of the arm 32 is provided nsoaoae with a series of ratchet teeth 36 facing outwardly, said ratchet being herein disclosed as of a width less than the arm 32 proper and extending a slight distance beyond the arm 32 proper to provide a lug 37 to engage within a slot 38 rovided in the guide plate 39, said guide p ate 39 being positioned inwardly of the riser 33 and comprised in the cabinet structure.
The arm 32 is constantly urged toward the chute 28 by a retractible member 10, herein disclosed as a coil spring, one end portion of said member 40 being anchored, as at 41, to the outer end portion of the arm 32 while the opposite end portion of said member 10 is secured to a pin 42 depending from the trackway or guide 20 at the opposite side of the chute 28. With the member 32 in its normal position, the
outer shoulder I) provided by the ratchet 36 is adapted to be engaged by a pin 43 depending from the outer end portion of the slide 21 so that when the arm 32 is in its normal position the slide 21 is efiectively held against inward movement sufficient to properly operatethe slide 8 to edect the delivery of an article.
The locking of the slide 21 against undue movement serves to prevent outward move ment of the slide 8 through the instrumentality of the link or rod 4A having one end portion operatively engaged, as at 45, to the rock arm 15 and its'opposite end portion connected, as at 46, to the forward portion of the slide 21;
When a coin or check 29 is inserted t'hrou hthe slot 27 it willengage within the chute 28 and be held therein by the runway 34:. By turning the shaft 12, the initial movement of the slide 21 will bring said I coin or check 29 in contact with the outer cam a, resulting in swinging movement of the arm 32 to an extent sutlicient to permit the pin 43 to pass free of the ratchet 36. The runway 34 is of a length sufficient that by the time the coin or check 29 has passed entirely thereover and dropped therefrom, the slide 8 will be moved forward a sufficient distance to effect the desired deliv cry of an article within the compartment 6. By having the ratchet teeth facing inwardly it will be readily understood that after a coin or check has been inserted through the slot 27 it cannot be removed placed, with respect to the arm 32 until after an article has been delivered from within thecompartment 6. Just as the coin or check 29 passes off of the runway 34 and drops downwardly, the retractible member or spring will return the arm 32 to its normal position so that the pin 43 will come into proper engagement with one of the teeth 36. lllfhen the coin or check 29 has passed entirely over the runway 34:
Ill
nor can the applied coin or check be disi and dropped therefrom the springs 19' and through a front riser 33 is an enclosed coin.
box 47 provided in its top wall with a slot 48 positioned outwardly of but immediately Y adjacent to the inner end of the runway 34 any suitable locking mechanism so that as the check or coin 29 asses from said runway 34 it will drop wit in the box 47 through said slot 48. ed to be held in applied position through enerally indicated at 49 and the rear wal? of said box is provided, preferably in its upper portion, with a) slot-50 through which may be deposited, after the box 47 has been removed, the checks or coins collected therein. Each extremity of the shaft 12 extends exteriorly of the cabinet C and associated with said extended portionds an operating crank 51 which is adapted to be manually operated after a check or coin has been inserted through a slot 27 whereby is obtained the desired delivery of an article within a compartment 6.
From the foregoin description it is thought to be obvious t at a dispensing apparatus constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it maybe assembled modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for thisv reason Ido not wish tobe understood as limiting myself'to the precise arrangement and formation of the several, parts herein shown in carry ing out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
1. In a check-controlled apparatus, a'sliding member supported for sliding movement, 3 second membersupported for swinging movement and positioned adjacent the sliding member, a check chute carried by the sliding member and disposed toward the swinging member, a runway carried by the swinging member and underlying the chute during a portion of the movement offlthe sliding member, said runway o crating to limit the passage of a coin trough the chute, swinging member in one position, coacting means carried by both of the members for holding the sliding member against move- The box 47 is adaptand opera ated, and it will also be obvious that my in- -vention is susceptible of some change and means for normally maintaining the ment when the swinging member is in its normal position, said swinging member beposition to release passage of a coin through the chute, means or normally maintaining the swinging member in one osition, coactin means carried by both of the members For holding the sliding member against movement when the swinging member is in its normal osition, said swinging member bein provi ed with means for coaction with a c eck within the chute for moving said swinging member into a position to release the sliding member, said swinging member havingv dlsposed therealong a series of ratchet otal mounting of the swinging member.
