Abstract

347,090. Controlling variable-speed gearing. MAYBACH MOTORENBAU GES., Friedrichshafen-on-Bodensee, Wurtemberg, Germany. Oct. 24, 1930, No. 31959. Convention date, Oct. 25, 1929. [Class 80 (ii).] Means for changing speed by vacuum upon a vehicle is based on the knowledge that it is advantageous to use a source of constant vacuum in changing up, and to use the variable vacuum in the motor intake in changing down. An over-driving auxiliary two-speed gear, 3, 6, 7, 4 is shown operated by a double clutch 8 sliding-on driving-shaft 1, and having teeth with bevelled ends for speed-equalizing. Levers 14, 16 are separately pivoted at 13 and connected by a spring 15 so that when lever 16 is moved over by piston 19, when the dead-centre is passed, the spring shoots the clutch right over. A control cock 23 is shown connecting the rear end of cylinder 20 to engine intake 25, but it can alternatively connect the forward end of the cylinder to a chamber 29 maintained in vacuum by the engine with the aid of a one-way valve 31, 33 being the fuel supply. In order to change from the direct drive shown, to over-drive, the cock 23 is turned from a handle 37 to its other position to connect pipe 22 to chamber 29. Piston 19 and lever 16 move to the left, but spring 15 cannot move clutch 8 until the load has been removed by a closing of the throttle. There is no operation of the main clutch. To return to direct drive, the handle 37 is returned to bring cock 23 to the position shown, connecting pipe 21 to intake 25. The throttle is again closed. The latter operation produces sufficient vacuum at 25 to move piston 19, but the direction of torque on the clutch 8 has reversed. On reopening the throttle, the grip on the clutch 8 is released so that spring 15 can effect the change.
