Abstract

[Class 78 (iv).] In a railway van for carrying mail, parcels, &c. and of the kind in which the packages are transferred to or from the van in separate trucks or containers c, running on transverse rails on the van floor, additional rails f adapted to slide outwardly on rollers o from under the fixed rails d and in the extended position serve as ramps to facilitate loading and unloading. During transport the wheels of the containers c are adapted to rest in depressions in the rails d, while adjustable holding devices g are also provided on the containers to prevent their displacement. Winches are mounted on the van for hauling the containers of the ramps f. In the van shown the storage spaces b are disposed on each side of an attendant's compartment a, the containers being arranged therein so as to leave gangways on opposite sides.
