346,148. Moulding ceramic material &c. by pressing plungers and dies. PORZELLANFABRIK KAHLA ZWEIGNIEDERLASSUNG FRIEBERG, Frieberg, Saxony, Germany. March 31, 1930, No. 10251. Convention date, Nov. 22, 1929. [Class 87 (ii).] Either the rotating plunger or die, or both, of a moulding-machine is provided with spiral ribs of one or more turns, the material-entering end of the ribs being tapered or flattened so that they encounter the material gradually and knead it during the pressure-moulding operation by making it move in a single or double spiral path. Fig. 1 shows an under plan view of a plunger which rotates in the direction of the arrow e and moulds the article c, Fig. 3. The spiral ribs in this case move the material outwardly towards the periphery of the plunger as shown by the dotted lines. In a modified form the spirals are arranged to move the material inwardly towards the centre of the plunger. In another modification the plunger is provided with a two-way spiral. Holes are provided in the plunger or the matrix for the escape of excess material. The end of the plunger may have any desired contour instead of being flat. In some instances the matrix is charged with the material before commencing the moulding operation, while in other cases the material is fed. in through the axis of the plunger or the matrix.
