[Classes 83 (i) and 83 (iv).] Moulding-machines; treating mould materials.- A machine B, Fig. 1a, movable on a travelling beam A carries all the tools necessary to clear a cast-pig bed and prepare it for another casting. A vertically movable head C carries a magnet or magnets D which can be used for picking up single pigs, a bundle of pigs bound with chains, or a basket filled with pigs, for clearing the sand of small pieces of iron, and for lifting a pattern plate J, Fig. 2, and dropping it on the smoothed sand to form the bed. The head C also carries, on either side of the magnets, a harrow G, Fig. 1a, and levelling board F, which can be turned out of the way when not in use. The head may also carry a hook K, Fig. 3, in place of the magnets D, for a grab R by which sand is transported or a separate winding apparatus L and grab may be provided. Breaking.-The machine also carries a drophammer P for breaking the pigs and for supporting a levelling plate H which can be set in position to produce the necessary horizontal steps in the sand. The head C may be connected to a pointer T, Fig. 2, arranged adjacent to a pointer S which is moved automatically by a drum R in accordance with the general slope of the bed so that the operator can adjust the position of the head C to keep it at a constant distance from the sand.
