[A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Feb. 8, 1930.] [Class 58.] To separate the grain from the husk and the cob of maize the ears are introduced singly into a centring device comprising a number of curved flexible steel strips 4 that directs the ears to a husking and shelling device. This device is mounted on a flywheel 7 and comprises a cylindrical box 8 with a conical upper part 9 provided with a central opening 10. Radial blades 11 project inwardly from the part 9 and are shaped at their ends to form knife portions 12 extending in planes parallel to the vertical axis of the machine. The cutting edge of each knife has two sharpened points 13. The blades are secured by screws passing through radial slots in the part 9 to sliding members 14 that are normally pressed inwards by springs 15. The flywheel 7 and its associated parts are rotated by hand or power from a shaft 19. A spiral gear 30 secured to the part 9 engages teeth at the ends of toothed feeding drums 23, 24, mounted in spring pressed bearings and causes these drums, which are carried in a frame supported by a stationary tube 16, to rotate when the flywheel rotates. The ear of maize, centred by the strips 4, is engaged by the knives 12, the husk and the grain being cut from the cob which is gripped and pulled into the tube 16 by the drums 23, 24. The husk and grains are opened and separated by the blades 12 and fall to the bottom of the machine where they are separated by an air current.
