[Class 98 (ii).] In a process of producing etched metal plates for photo-mechanical relief printing, a resist screen is applied as by mechanical printing to a metal plate before applying the sensitive coating. In a modified process, the resist screen so applied serves to yield the light parts of the image, and after the sensitive coating has been applied, a second screen serving for the dark parts and half-tones is superimposed thereon. The sensitive layer comprises a colloid sensitized as with ammonium bichromate, and the plate is finished, after exposure to a negative, by the known steps of washing with water, heating, and etching. The development with water washes off the second screen and the unexposed colloid, and leaves bare the first screen where the colloid has been removed; while at the exposed parts, the colloid printed through the second screen remains and covers up the first screen.
