344,908. Kinematograph projectors. VISIONTONE TALKING PICTURES, Ltd., St. Lawrence House, Trump Street, King Street, London. Dec. 5, 1929, No. 37388. Convention date, Dec. 6, 1928. [Class 97 (i).] On the front of a vertical panel are mounted a film gate, a feed spool and sprocket on one side of the gate, and an intermittent sprocket, take-up sprocket, and take-up spool, on the other side of the gate, all the shafts therefor extending perpendicularly through the panel; a motor and transmission mechanism are mounted behind the panel, and the mechanism includes clutches in the drives to the spools so that rewinding may be effected. Fig. 1 shows in plan a cabinet 2 containing the panel 6 upon which spool shafts 100, 102, and sprockets 8, 12, 10 are mounted, the door 22 of the cabinet being shown opened horizontally about its bottom edge. The shaft 30 of a motor 4 drives a vertical shaft 34 through worm or other gearing, and thence, through gears 38, 42, 44, the shafts 46, 48 which are connected by ratchet devices 64, 66 to the shafts of the continuous-feed sprockets 8, 10 ; the ratchet devices enable the sprockets to be rotated in their direction of feed independently of the driving mechanism. Shafts 82, 74 are respectively connected to the motor shaft 30 and to the shaft 48 by a belt 78, a crossed belt 70, and carry movable elements of clutches 95, 94 which are alternatively engaged, by means of a hand-lever 88 pivoted at 90, to drive the spool shafts 100, 102. A speed governor 146, regulable by adjustment of a knob 148 is provided, and an additional pulley 216 may be mounted on the shaft 74 to drive an external take-up spool by a belt 218 when desired, the belt being passed over a hook 222 when not in use. The motor shaft 30 is connected to the shaft 104, Fig. 4, of the pin wheel of a Geneva movement driving the intermittent sprocket 12, and the shaft 104 is geared to a shaft 192 carrying a member 190 having a depression in its face to receive a button on the end of a spring 184 carried by the shaft of the intermittent shutter 24. The shutter 24 is enclosed by a housing 180 carried by the door 22, so that the driving connection to the shutter is broken when the door is opened, and the Geneva movement &c. is mounted in a casing 110 supported by rubber pads. The plane of the gate is horizontal ; it is lighted by a lamp in a ventilated housing 154, Fig. 2, carrying a condenser adjustable by a knurled head 160, and mounted on a bracket 162 pivoted at 164, and the light beam is directed laterally and forwardly by reflectors 170, 172 to the projection lens 26 carried by the door 22. The spools are housed in a box 16 which may be provided with a hole 214 receiving a handle carrying a gear wheel to engage a gear 212 on the shaft of the pay-out spool, when rewinding is to be effected by hand. The intermittent sprocket 12 may. be covered during rewinding by a shield 230 pivoted on an arm 228 and brought into position by turning the arm about a pin projecting axially from the sprocket. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) describes also a film-controlled switch for the motor and light source. The switch comprises a fixed contact 134 and a contact carried by a spring 132 which are kept in engagement, while the film is in the gate, by a sliding pin 140 engaging the film edge. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
