Abstract

H. ; Newport Road, Wilkinsburg, and Gudge, B. J. ; 144, Avenue A, East Pittsburg, all in Pennsylvania, U.S.A.) Jan. 16, 1930, No. 1578. Convention date, Jan. 18, 1929. [Class 23.] Bowls or containers, particularly bowls used in the manufacture of artificial silk, comprise a base 2 formed of agglomerated material such as shredded fabric or ground asbestos, impregnated with a binder, such as a phenolic condensation product, and a wall 1 formed of laminated sheets of fibrous material impregnated with a similar binder, the base and wall being moulded under heat and pressure into a unitary structure. The inner sheets of the wall are formed of finely woven material such as cambric and the outer sheets of coarsely woven material such as canvas or duck, or comminuted material may be used as an interior facing. The lower edges of the sheets forming the wall are bent inwardly to form a ragged-edged flange which intimately associates with the material forming the base. The base is preferably moulded around a bush 5 which forms the bearing for the driving-shaft. The wall is formed with an annular shoulder 8, and the cover 3 which is also formed of impregnated sheet material, is provided with inwardly extending lugs 11 adapted to slide into notched channels 13 in the rim, the channels being bevelled so that, during the rotation of the bowl when spinning, the cover tends to tighten the engagement.
