Abstract
344,161. Making tubes. KOZICZ, J., 93, Margaretenstrasse, Vienna. Jan. 30, 1930, No. 3223. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Feb. 3, 1930.] [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv).] Uniting by fusion; angular bending and straightening ; rolling-mandrels and carriages and supports. -The longitudinal seams of circular or angular, plated or other metal tubes are continuously welded by a flame, which enters a jacket surrounding the tubes so as to bathe the inside and outside thereof and thus preheat the tube. A preheating flame of lower temperature may enter the jacket opposite the welding flame to cause the edges of the tube to converge in approaching the welding point. The tube is formed from metal strips by toll-bending and is passed from the final bending rolls 1 through sizing rolls 3 .. 6, between which it passes through guide rolls 10, 12 and a slot guide roll 11 and through a jacket 22, 23, Fig. 6, into which the flames from a welding burner 17 and preheating burner 19 project. The sizing rolls are of successively smaller diameter and are driven by successively smaller pinions so as to increase the peripheral speed in succession and thus to propel the tube forward. The tube then passes through straightening rolls 13 .. 16 and through a pair of ejecting rolls 18. A series of cylindrical or barrelshaped mandrels 7 are arranged in the pass of the sizing rolls and may be adjustably mounted on a screw rod, carried by a lug 9 projecting through the slot in the tube. The first mandrel is longitudinally grooved as shown in Fig. 3. The preheating jacket is formed in two longitudinally and transversely adjustable parts 22, 23, provided with tapered air holes 27 arranged at different heights and inclined towards the axis of the tube in the direction of travel. The flames of the burners project into the jacket through slots 25, 26. The spread of the flame from the burner 17 is restricted in the interior of the tube by the end of the first mandrel. The burner 17 is mounted in a support so as to be adjustable vertically, transversely and longitudinally, and is also pivoted and arranged to bear against a stop 21 in its operative position. Specification 264,534, [Class 83 (ii), Metal articles &c.], is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) states that the edges of the tube lie close against the slot 25 and the flame comes in contact only with the seam. It is further stated that the welding may be performed electrically. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
