344,027. Glass manufacture. SOC. ANON. DES MANUFACTURES DES GLACES ET PRODUITS CHIMIQUES DE ST.-GOBAIN, CHAUNY, ET CIREY, 1 bis, Place des Saussaies, Paris. Nov. 28, 1929, No. 36502. Convention date; July 5. [Class 56.] Tempering.-Relates to the process described in Specification 340,108 for tempering sheet glass by means of jets of air directed on to both surfaces of the glass while it is hot. According to the invention, the sheets are introduced into a furnace in succession, and the conditions of heating are so determined that when the last sheet is put into the furnace, the first sheet inserted has been brought to a uniform temperature suitable for tempering. In the construction shown in Fig. I, the furnace is divided into compartments d each of which is heated by electric heaters e, and the glass sheets a, suspended by hooks or tongs b, are introduced into the compartments and removed therefrom by a winch l on a carriage h running on an overhead track g. When a particular sheet is sufficiently heated, it is lifted by the winch to the tempering device i which may be of the kind described in Specification 341,218. In the construction shown in Fig. 2, the glass sheets a are carried through the furnace by carriages m running on an overhead track n and propelled along it by lugs o on an endless chain p. The part s of the track adjacent to the exit r of the furnace is inclined downwards towards a tempering device t.
