Abstract
509,775. Bending and tempering glass sheets. STEVENS, A. H. (Pittsburgh Plate Glass Co.). Jan. 20, 1938, No. 1921. [Class 56] A method of bending and hardening a glass sheet consists in suspending the sheet in a vertical position from its upper edge, heating the sheet until the glass is plastic, applying. curved pressing-elements to both surfaces of the sheet, and then chilling the glass by an air blast while still held by the pressing-elements. The sheet 41, Fig. 9, is suspended from a bar 31 either directly or through the interposition of a metal sheet 39. The bar 31 is supported by an endless chain conveyer and is carried by it through a tunnel kiln. The glass sheet when hot and plastic is gripped between pressing- plates 43, 45 and bent to the required curvature. These plates 43, 45 slide through slots in the wall of the kiln and are moved to and from one another by levers oscillated by a motor. The plate 39, when used, is also bent by pressing- plates 42, 44, and when so bent keeps the glass sheet in the bent position while it continues to move through the kiln during the annealing period. When the glass sheets are to be hardened or tempered, pressing devices in the form of grids 79, Fig. 10, are carried by casings 62, Fig. 4, which are mounted on trucks 64. These trucks are moved to and from one another by a screw 67 driven by a motor 70 through a slipping-clutch 71. The blowers 62, 63 are provided with nozzles 84 which are adjustable horizontally so that their forward ends can be made to conform to the shape of the bent sheet. Air is supplied to the nozzles by fans 74 through trunks 78.
