Abstract

343,933. Machines for separating riveted joints and for riveting. LONDON ELECTRIC RAILWAY CO., 55, Broadway, Westminster, GRAHAM, E., 11, Westbury Road, Ealing, London, and CHIPPERFIELD, W., 34, Desby Lane, Heaton Chapel, Stockport, Lancashire. Nov. 25, 1929, No. 36087. [Classes 83 (ii), 83 (iii), and 83 (iv).] Making wheels; drilling-machines.-A rivetremoving machine, which may also be provided with a riveting adjunct, comprises means for removing by drilling the head of a rivet, and means for ejecting the remainder of the rivet by end thrust. The supporting brackets 10 are each previded with slides 11 operated simultaneously by rack-and-pinion gearing 18 from a shaft 16 which is rotated by means of a hand-wheel 20 and bevel gearing 21. The slides 11 support a pair of parallel shafts 12 connected by spur gearing 14 and each carrying spaced rollers 24 which are shaped to support the peripheries of a pair of wheels 22, 23 on which rivet - extracting or riveting operations are to be performed. One of the shafts 12 is rotated to adjust the work by ratchet gearing operated by a hand-lever 25. The left-hand end, Fig. 1, of the machine is provided with rivet - removing mechanism mounted on a pedestal 29, and consists of a carriage 31 carrying a drill-spindle 34 which is driven through gearing 35 from a belt pulley 37 and is fed axially by means of a pinion 38 operated from a hand-wheel 41. The carriage 31 also carries an ejector 33 mounted on a bar 42 and operated through a lever 49 from a pneumatic cylinder 44 controlled by a two-way valve 47 and supplied from a pipe line 45. A locating plunger 51 is mounted opposite the operating position of the tools and is moved forward by a lever 53, the work being adjusted until the end of the plunger engages over the head of the rivet. The drill is first fed forward to drill away the rivet head and the carriage 31 is then shifted laterally to bring the ejector opposite the drilled rivet. This movement also brings the slotted head of the bar 42 over the end of the operating lever 49. Air is then admitted to the cylinder 44 to push the rivet out of its hole. The spacing movement of the carriage 31 between the drilling and ejecting position is determined by a crank-disc 55 mounted on a vertical shaft 54 and carrying a block engaging a slot 60 in the pedestal 29. The shaft 54 is turned through 180‹ by means of a lever 61 coacting with opposed notches 65 in a tubular member 65<1>. After removing the rivet, the carriage is returned to the drilling position and the wheel 22 is turned by rotating the shafts 12 until the next rivet is positioned opposite the locating plunger. In order to prevent operation of the lever 49 when the drill is in operative position the spindle 67 of the valve 47 carries a shaped plate 68 coacting with a block 70 on the carriage, the arrangement being such that the valve spindle can only be rotated to operate the ejector lever when the ejecting-plunger is in operative position. A riveting mechanism may be mounted on a pedestal 30 at the opposite end of the machine from the drilling mechanism, and comprises a plunger 73 adapted to be operated through a lever 78 from an air cylinder 79 to force a rivet 74 into position. The rivet is expanded by a snap 75 which is moved up by an air cylinder 83 acting through a lever 86, and hollow plunger 87. The riveting-snap is actuated by air admitted to a cylinder 89 controlled by a valve 84 which is arranged to operate the riveter after the cylinder 83 has been charged. The snap has a serrated end face and is rotated by an electric motor acting through a belt 94 and worm reducing gear 93. The work may be accurately located, either for rivet extracting or riveting by means of a device comprising a two-armed, spring-mounted lever 97 moving over a scale 100 and carrying a projection 98 arranged to be in the path of the rivets 74 the scale reading serving to indicate when the rivet has reached its correct position in alignment with the plunger 73. Alternatively the lever 97 may be located on the opposite side of the wheel from that shown and may be arranged to coact with rivet holes instead of rivets.
