[Class 6 (i).] Means for diffusing or distributing finely divided substances for treating crops, extinguishing fires, &c., comprises a container rotatably supported by bearings adapted to be mounted on the under parts of aircraft, the container having a discharge orifice in its rear end and having means for rotating it to feed the substances to the orifice and discharge them into the atmosphere at a predetermined rate. The container A may be of streamline contour with its axis in the line of flight and may be rotated on its axis by a windmill 0 and reduction gearing M, N. The angular speed may be controlled and the rotation stopped by adjusting the pitch of the blades of the windmill or by means of a hand-brake surrounding the container and operated from the aircraft. Helical blades or vanes Z may be provided in the interior to turn over and feed the substances to the outlet. Means for closing the outlet may consist of a rotary part S provided with a rubber ring T and mounted on a non-rotary part V which is carried by a pivoted arm W operated from the aircraft by a Bowden wire X. The container shown is provided with hollow trunnions B, C mounted in ball bearings D, E carried by stayed brackets F, G depending from a rail H connected by clips I to the fuselage. An open-ended axial tube Y passes through the container to a point near the discharge orifice, so that air passing through it may assist the discharge by injector action. The vanes Z are arranged between the tube Y and the inner periphery of the container and form an internal framework. The substances may be discharged into an air channel leading to the rear of the aircraft; and this channel may be provided with a fish-tail spreader.
