[Class 6 (i).] Wheeled apparatus for distributing sand &c. on roads comprises a rotary hollow bucket-wheel or paddle-wheel spreader into which the material is fed, this wheel being mounted to rotate about a horizontal axis parallel to the direction of motion of the apparatus so as to project the sand &c. laterally of the apparatus from a sector of its periphery which is normally closed but is opened automatically. The apparatus is used in connection with a hauling vehicle or trailer having a tipping bottom or body so that sand &c. may be fed to the distributer from the vehicle or trailer by the progressive lifting of the bottom or body. The trailer C is provided with a discharge spout 1 controlled by a flap 2 and delivering into the hopper 3 of the distributer. The spreader shown in Figs. 1 and 3 consists of a paddle-wheel 6 on a longitudinal shaft 7 driven by bevel gearing from the wheels 5. The paddles form buckets normally closed by spring-controlled flaps 12 on spindles 11 provided with arms carrying rollers 17. An adjustable cam sector 18, 18<1> engages the rollers and opens the flaps at a predetermined part of the periphery of the lower part of the paddle-wheel 6. The length of the sector is variable by rotating a screw 24 and so radially moving the joint 23 of two links 22, 22<1> connected to arms 21, 21<1> projecting from rings on the hub 13, which rings are connected to the two sector parts 18, 18<1> by arms 19, 191. The position of the sector may be varied by moving the nut 26 through which the screw 24 passes. The nut 26 is secured on a guiding sector 27, A rotary feeder 28 feeds the sand from the hopper 3 to a conduit 29 leading into the wheel 6 and provided with an apertured sleeve 30 movable by a handle 32 to direct the sand into the desired part of the wheel 6. Changespeed devices may be provided in connection with the feeder 28 and distributing wheel 6. Fig. 6 shows a distributing wheel forming buckets 35 closed by flaps 12a adapted to be opened by a cam sector 18a. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) describes also the modification shown in Fig. 6 (Cancelled). In this the flaps 12 are dispensed with and the paddle-wheel is surrounded by a cover 34 except at the part where discharge is to take place. There is a space between the wheel 6 and its cover to collect sand thrown against the cover. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
