Abstract

343,203. Electrolysis. MANN, C., 4, R³ckerstrasse, Munich, Germany. Nov. 29, 1929, No. 36606. [Class 41.] Metals, pickling; electrodes.- Articles of precious metals are cleaned by self-excited electrolytic action set up by immersion in contact with a metal such as aluminium in an alkaline solution, e.g. a solution of sodium bicarbonate, to which is added wood carbon, active carbon or active silicic acid as a catalyst. Instead of aluminium, chemically pure zinc or a silvercontaining aluminium alloy may be employed as anode metal. The anode may be in the form of a chain which lies on and between the articles. Alternatively it may be in the form of a basket container built up of rods of star section or otherwise formed to present a large area. Rods over which are wound wire helices may be employed. A hollow rod d, shown in section, may serve as container for the catalytic material f with which the electrolyte communicates through holes d<2>. The holes are protected by a removable porous cover e which may be of rubber sponge, felt, or a fabric composed of fine silver wire.
