Abstract

343,149. Testing optical adjustments of lamps. SQUYER, A. R., 1601, Lowell Avenue, Springfield, Illinois, U.S.A. Nov. 14, 1929, No. 34871. [Class 97 (i).] Apparatus for testing the optical adjustments of lamps, e.g. motor car headlights, consists of a boxlike structure carried by a support, and provided with apertures through which a beam of light from the lamp may be projected on to a screen having index marks, the screen being viewed through an additional aperture. An adjustable mirror in the structure provides a means for ascertaining the distance in front of the lamp at which the beam will strike the ground. A sheet metal box-like structure 1, having apertures 2 at one end for the admission of rays of light from the lamp 3 to be tested, is adjustably mounted on a stand by bars 10, so that operation of the screw 11 raises and lowers the box 1 while keeping it horizontal. The rays from the lamp are reflected from an adjustable mirror 4 on to a ground glass screen 5, having index marks 14, 15 corresponding to the apertures 2. A cam 13 on a shaft 16 which also carries a dial 19 bears against one end of the pivoted mirror 4 so that bv rotation of the shaft 16 the rays from the lamp are brought into coincidence with the marks 14, 15, observation being made through the opening 31. A scale on the dial 19 in conjunction with a pointer 20 indicates the distance ahead of the lamp 3 at which the rays will strike a flat road. In use, the apparatus is wheeled up to the lamp 3 and its height adjusted so that rays from the lamp 3 through additional apertures 22 will fall on windows 26 in the side of the box in coincidence with the arrows 27, which then point to the centre of the lamp 3. This height adjustment alters the position of the pointer 20, which is connected to the bars 10, as shown. The mirror 4 is then adjusted until the rays through the apertures 2 are reflected on to the marks 14, 15. Should the rays be closer together or further apart on the screen than the marks 14, 15 the lamp is adjusted in its casing until coincidence is effected. The lamp may also be adjusted until the rays will strike the ground at the desired distance ahead. To facilitate moving the apparatus wheels 9 are fitted on a pivoted lever 24 which is depressed by raising the handle 28, lifting the stand off its feet 8 and supporting it on the wheels 9.
