Abstract

342,908. Artificial leather. ENGEL, A., 3, Piazza Dante, Bergamo, Italy. Feb. 13, 1930, No. 4893. Convention date, Feb. 13, 1929. [Class 96.] In the manufacture of artificial leather from scraps or clippings of natural leather comprising washing, trituration into pulp, and making up sheets or boards by hand or by ply-machines, the pulp, before, or during, trituration is subjected to an oxidizing action. The clippings are cut up, washed, and the :nass neutralized with alkali if necessary and again washed, ozone being blown through the washing machine. Trituration is then effected in a refiner and during the treatment an emulsifying agent such as dilute soap solution is added, and also sumach and a suitable proportion of basic dyestuff to produce the normal colour of the leather. The final addition of stabilized latex and blown fish oil produces a pulp from which sheets may be made in the ordinary way, the pulp at this stage being present in the mixture in the proportion of about 1 to 30. Powerful suction is used and draining is completed by a hydraulic press. The drying is effected at a temperature not exceeding 30‹ C.
