[Class 146 (iii).] In order to facilitate sharpening, the sheath of pencils is formed of a strip of wood foil of a breadth equal to the length of the lead and wound round the lead in the form of a flat spiral. The foil is cut from a log of unseasoned timber, by a veneercutting machine, so that the majority of the cells lie in the longitudinal direction, and are uncut. To increase the strength of the pencil, it can be passed between heated compressing rollers which impart the desired cross-sectional shape.
