[Class 3 (i). ] A number of movable mirror elements 6 are disposed behind a sign facia 2, and are adapted to be simultaneously oscillated first to a position where they receive light through the facia and reflect it thereon, and then to a position where they do not illuminate the facia nor reflect light to an observer, the elements moving relatively to one another. The facia may be in the form of a stencil or may consist of a design &c. painted &c. on the elements 6. The oscillation of the elements mav be effected by cams 20 which reciprocate racks 16 gearing with a pinion 13 on each longitudinally-pivoted element 6. Springs 19 press the rack rollers 18 in permanent contact with the cams 20, or a path-cam is provided. Alternatively the pinions 13 may gear together and the racks 16 be omitted, or arms on the elements be connected by a reciprocating bar. Sets of elements 6 arranged side-byside behind letters &c. of the sign may be actuated in any required sequence by disposing differentlyshaped cams 20 on the driving spindle 21. Lamps 30 are provided inside the sign to illuminate the facia at night, the facia being seen intermittently with the oscillation of the elements 6. Coloured transparent screens may be located in front of and behind the elements 6.
