Abstract

342,434. Heating charge. HEGINBOTTOM, W. G., 1910, St. John Street, Flint, Michigan, U.S.A. Nov. 28, 1929, No. 36547. [Class 7 (iii).] In a means for heating the charge of an internal combustion engine wherein the exhaust gases are used and a throttle valve for controlling the flow of gases to the heater and a throttle valve for controlling the flow of combustible mixture are connected, means are provided to adjust the relative movement of the two valves. The exhaust gases are led from the exhaust manifold 2 to the heater 9 surrounding the charge forming device 4 passing a volume control throttle 12. The throttle 15 controls the passage of the gases through the heater and is connected by a rod 41 and arm 42 to the cranked arm 45 of the throttle 23 controlling the flow of explosive charge. Loosely mounted on the spindle 24 of the throttle 23 is a cam disc 27 formed with a cam groove 37 in which is guided a roller 38 attached to the end of the rod 41. Upon opening the throttle 23 the throttle 15 remains on its seat whilst the roller 38 travels along the vertical part of the groove, but when it reaches the horizontal part, the throttle 15 is opening whilst the throttle 23 is opening. The cam disc is connected by the rod 28 to a lever 30 on the dashboard and is also connected to the throttle 12. The movement of the lever 30 controls the area of flow to the heater and also adjusts the relative movement between the throttles 15, 23. In modifications the throttle 12 is situated in the nipple 22 of the exhaust outlet of the heater or in the nipple 20, whilst the connection between the throttle 12 may be adjustably made to the arm 24 or the lever 41. The air inlet is arranged around the exhaust pipe at 7 and connected by the tube 6 to the charge forming device. A sleeve 8 is arranged to control the admission of extra air and thus control the inlet air temperature, whilst a throttle 5 controls the volume and is connected to the dashboard. Fig. 12 shows an arrangement wherein two pipes 84 and 92 form the inlet and return from the heater to the exhaust pipe, the throttle 87 controlling the flow through the heater and the throttle 99 forming a volume control. Further modifications show the throttle 99 situated in the nipples 83, 85, or 91, and the connection made to any of a series of holes in the cam disc.
