HEAT-CONTROLLING MEANS FOR CHARGE-FORMING DEVICES Application filed March 14, 1923, Serial No. 625,055. Renewed February 1, 1927.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in heat controlling means for charge forming devices, the object being ,to provide novel means for controlling the application of heat to the charge forming device whereby the temperature of the charge can'be regulated to a nicety in order to produce an explosive charge of high efliciency without any danger of overheating the charge throughout the entire range of operation of the engine under all atmospheric conditions. w I
Another object of my invention is to provide heat controlling means so constructed that when usedin connection with an internal combustion engine that when starting the engine I am able to apply as large a volume of exhaust gases as desired for as long a time as desired to heat the charge, and so arranged that when the throttle is opened to any predetermined position from closed position to full open position, the means for controlling the application of heat will be op erated so as to lessen the volume of the heating medium passing through the heat jacket.
A still further object of the invention is to provide means for allowing the charge throttling valve to move any predetermined desired distance before the exhaust throttling valve is moved, whereby the exhaust throt tling valve will dwell on its seat while the throttle valve is moved a predetermined distance so as to hold the volume of exhaust gases in the heating chamber for heating the charge quickly, while the engine is warming A further object of the invention is to provide controlling means in the form of an adjustable cam so mounted and connected to the controlling means that the adjusted position of the cam determines the distance of movement the throttle valve is allowed to open before causing the exhaust throttle valve to'be operated.
l A still further object of the invention is to provide an additional valve having a con? tion is to provide a construction which is exceedingly simple and cheap to manufacture and one which can be readily applied to any of the well known types of charge forming devices used in connection with internal combustion engines of various types whereby manually operated means is provided for setting the device so as to determine the movement of the controlling valves to regulate the application of the heating medium for heating the explosive charge and the air to produce said charge.
Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter set forth and the novel features thereof defined by the appended claims.

through the heat jacket 9 to heat the charge in its passage to the internal combustion engine and while I have shown a particular construction of heat jacket, it is, of course, understood that various forms of heat jackets can be employed without departing from the spirit of my invention and therefore I do not wish to limit myself to the particular manner of applying heat to the charge in its I passage to the internal combustion engine.

The end of the exhaust manifold 2 has i mounted therein an exhaust throttling valve 15 carried by a valve stem 16 provided with an arm 17 for operating the same, said valve being capable of completel closing the outlet of said exhaust mani old to cause the entire volume of exhaust gases to pass through the heat jacket.
Secured to the end of the exhaust manifold is a coupling 18 from which extends an exhaust pipe 19 to the muflier (not shown) in the usual manner. The coupling 18 is provided with an inlet nipple 20 from which extends a conduit 21 to an outlet nipple 22 formed on the heat jacket 9 of the charge forming device whereby the exhaust gases will be by-passed around the valve 15 when in closed position so as to pass through the heat jacket and heat the explosive charge in its passage to the internal combustion engine.
The charge forming device is provided with a throttle valve 23 carried by a shaft 24 provided with an arm 25 to which is connected an operating rod 26 controlled in the usual manner from the body of the vehicle to which the device is attached.
The main object of this invention is to control the application of heat to'a nicety so that the temperature of the charge being formed by the charge forming device can be controlled from the seatof the vehicle to which the device is attached in such a manner that after once being set, the application of heat is controlled by the movement of the throttle valve of the charge forming device and to accomplish this result I arrange on the shaft 24 of the throttle valve 23 a cam 27, which is loosely mounted thereon and is capable ofturning on the shaft, the position of said cam being controlled by an operating rod 28 which is connected to a crank 29 provided with a lever 30 working in an. indicating plate 31 secured to the dash of the motor vehicle as clearly shown in Figures 1 and 10, whereby the cam can be rotated around the throttle shaft. The construction is such that when the cam is oscillated to shift its position, it will. be held in that position and on the indicating plate 31 I have designated three positions for the lever to assume, but it is, of course, understood that as many positions as desired can be used and means for holding the cam in its adjusted position as will be later described which will prevent the cam from turning after once being adjusted.
In the drawing I have shown this cam mounted directly on the throttle shaft 24, but it is, of course, understood that the cam can be mounted adjacent the throttle shaft on a suitable support and operated in the same manner, but I have found that the manner of mounting the cam is simplified by mounting it directly upon the shaft, but I do not wishto limit myself to any particular way and position of mounting the cam.
The cam is connected to the arm 14 of the volume valve 13 by a link 32 so that as the cam is adjusted, the position of the valve 13 will be changed, thereby increasing or decreasing the area of the inlet opening of the heat jacket.
The cam is herein shown held in its adjusted position by frictional means which comprises a pin 33 secured in the wall of the heat jacket and extending through a slot 3; formed in the cam plate 27, said pin carrying a frictional washer 35 held in frictional contact with the outer face of the cam by coil spring 36 which, allows the cam to be moved by the operating means located on the dash of-the motor vehicle to which the device is attached and be retained in its adjusted position.
This is only one form of means for adjust ing and holding the cam plate in its adjusted position and I do not wish to limit myself to the use of this particular construction of means as I am aware that various other forms of means for adjusting and holding the cam plate in adjusted position can be used without departing from the spirit of my invention. 7
The cam plate is provided with a slot 37,
the particular formation of which can be changed, but as herein shown it is provided at one end with a substantially vertical portion and a substantially horizontal portion, which gradually terminates in a downwardly extending portion. Slidably mounted within the slot 37 of the cam plate is a member 38 provided with a roller having guide flanges for holding the same in the guide way formed by the slot and can be in the nature of an anti-friction roller to facilitate the movement of the member within the slot.
The member 38 is provided with a reduced outer end on which is pivotally mounted a hub 39 provided with a socket 40 in which is secured an operating rod 41 which has its free end pivotally and adjustably connected to the arm 17 of the exhaust gas throttling Valve 15. The member 38 carries a rigid arm 42 which is pivotally connected at its free end to a vpin i4 pivotally mounted in the outer end'of an arm 45 fixed on'one end of the throttle shaft'24 whereby the member 38 travels vertically in the vertical portion of the slot 37 of the cam plate when the throttle valve shaft is oscillated so as to allow or move therewith, the, movement of the exhaust valve in respect to the throttle valve being determined by the shape and position of the slot in .the cam plate. While I have shown a slot of peculiar formation, I am aware that the same canbe changed to increase or decrease] the distance of travel of the throttle valve before the exhaust throttle valve is moved and therefore I d9 not wish to limit myself to the details of constructionas herein shown as I amaware thatwarious forms of cam plates can be used for guiding the member connecting the throttle valveto the exhaust throttle to cause the exhaust throttle valve to dwell on its seat a p'redeter- I mined length of time after the throttle valve of the charge forming device has opened a predetermined distance.
In the construction shown and thusfar described it will be seen that I have provided a heating means control wherein means is provided for completely diverting the exhaust gases out of their natural path of travel through a heating chamber to heat the charge in its passage to the internal combustion engine controlled by the movement of the throttle valve of the charge forming device inconnection with adjustable means whereby the volume ofexhaust gases delivered to the heating means can be controlled to a nicety so that under different atmospheric conditionsmore or less heat can be appliedvas necessary.
It will also be noted that the adjusting of the cam operates the volume controlling valve so as to increase or decrease the area of the inlet to the heating chamber so that when the throttle is moved into full open position additional means is provided for cutting off the application ofheat to the charge forming device.
It will also be noted that in connection with theheating means for heating the charge produced in the charge forming device, .I have provided an air heater which is located to the engine side of the exhaust throttle valve and so connected to the air inlet that the air will be heated before being delivered to the charge forming device, means being provided for regulating the temperature of the air by an atmospheric air valve.
In the modification shown in Figure 4 the manner ofoperatingtheexhaustthrottlevalve and throttle valve of the charge forming device is identically the same as shown in the preferred form of my invention, but I have by a valve stem 47 provided with an arm 48 connected to the cam 27 by an operating link 49 whereby the movement of the cam in adjusting thesa'me controls the position of the valve.
In the modification of my invention as shown in Figure 5.the construction is substantially the same as shown in Figure 1 with the exception that the volume valve is located in the inlet nipple 20' of the casting of the main exhaust line. In this form I show a valve 50 arranged in the nipple 20 carried by a valve stem 51 which is provided with an arm 52 connected to the cam 27 by a connecting link 53 so as to further retain the volume of heat in the heating chamber of the charge forming device. This construction enables the invention to be applied to other forms and styles of charge forming devices in internal combustion engines and also provides means for offering a resistance to the exhaust gases at the point of connection with the main exhaust line so that a certain amount of back pressure to the passage of the exhaust gases to the heating jacket is obtained in order to retain the volume of heating medium in the heating chamber which I have found under certain conditions is an advantage in carrying out the efficiency of my invention when used in connection with other forms of internal combustion engines and charge forming devices.
In Figure 6 I show still another manner of connecting the volume valve to means operated by the movement of the throttle and in this form I provide the operating rod 41 employed for connecting the throttle exhaust valve to the throttle valve of the charge forming device through the medium of the cam connection, with a member 55 in which is ad justably secured a bolt 56 to which 1s p1votally connected an operating rod 57 whlch extends upwardly and is connected to an arm 58 -fixed on a shaft 59 carrying a volume valve 60 disposed in an inlet of the heating jacket so that it is moved with the exhaust throttling valve and by the adjustable connection, the relative position of these two valves in respect to their closed positions can be changed,
but in practice I preferably connect the same i in such a manner that when the exhaust throtcompletely cutting off the application of heat to the charge forming device by the movement of the throttle as when the throttle is moved'into open position and the valve 60 is moved intoclosecl position so as to completely close the exhaust inlet to the heating jacket of ,the charge forming device.
This construction provides an additional way for connecting up the valves in such a manner that the exhaust throttling valve dwells on its seat a predetermined length of time after the throttle valve of the charge forming device starts in its opening movement, which time is determined by the position of the adjustable cam.
In Figure 7 I have illustrated a form substantially as shown in the preferred embodiment of my'invention and to avoid confusion in illustrating the device, I have left off the cam, but it is, of course, understood that the device as here illustrated is to be used in connection with a cam and the heating controlled means as shown in Figures 1, 2 and 3.
In this form the throttle valve shaft 61 of the charge forming device carries an arm 62 which is connected to an arm 63 of'the valve movement of these valves in respect to one another can be adjusted, but in practice they are so connected that the valve 65 is in open position when the throttle is closed and is partly or fully closed when the throttle is wide open and as it is interconnected with the main exhaust valve and throttle valve through the medium of the cam, back pressure will be avoided.
In the various figures I have shown the cam plate arranged on one side of the charge forming device and in using my invention in connection with various forms of charge forming devices and internal combustion engines, it is sometimes of an advantage to mount the same on the opposite side of the charge forming device. In order to provide a construction by means ofswhich it can be mounted on either side of the charge forming .device in its proper position in respect to the throttle lever thereof, I show in Figure 8 a bearing 67 in which is mounted a shaft 68 having cranks 69 and 7 0 adjustably mounted on 1 jacket and while I have shown certain means for accomplishing the result, I, ;do not wish to limit myself to the mounting of the cam in any particular manner and connecting the same to the valve in any particular manner as I am aware that a cam can be mounted in a number of ways to receive a movable member which has a connection to the arm of the throttle valve shaft and the arm of the exhaust throttle valve.
In Figure 9 I show means for carrying out my invention by connecting the exhaust valve used in a branch leading to the heating jacket to the throttle valve through the medium of a cam and operating member by means of which the exhaust valve can be retained in full open position until the throttle valve is moved a predetermined distance-and it is illustrated to show the application of my invention to what is known as the Pierce marvel type of heat control in which the application of heat is controlled by the movement of the throttle.
In the construction of heating means con- 7 6 to a heating chamber 7 7 of a charge form ing device 78 provided with a throttle valve and cam mechanism which is connected by a connecting rod 79 to a valve 80 mounted in the branch pipe .as clearly shown so that the valve will remain open until the throttle valve has traveled a predetermined distance.
In-Figures 12, 13 and 14, 81 indicates a charge forming device provided with a heat jacket 82 having an inlet nipple 88 from which extends a pipe 84 connected to an outlet nipple 85 of a valve casing 86 adapted to be arranged in the main exhaust line. said valve casingbeing provided with an exhaust throttling valve 87 carried by shaft 88 on which is mounted an arm 89. The valve casing 86 is provided with an inlet nipple 90 connected to an outlet nipple 91 of the heat jacket by a pipe 92 so that when the main exhaust throttling valve 87 is closed the exhaust gases passing through the main exi haust line will be bypassed around the-valve i 87 so as totravel through the heat jacket of the charge forming device.
The charge forming device is providedwith the usual throttle valve 93 carried by a throttle valve shaft 94 on which is mounted acam plate 95. The cam plate is provided with an car 96 having a series of openings formed therein in one of which is adapted to be loosely secured an operating rod 97 connected at its other end to an arm 98 carried by a shaft 99 which is provided with a volume valve 100 arranged in the inlet nipple 90 of the valve casing 80 so that the adjustment of the cam to change the position of the volume valve will regulate the volume of gases passing through the heat jacket. The shaft .94. is prov ded with an a m 01 adjusted in two positions so as to change therelative movement of the throttle valve and the exhaust throttling valve as well as the volume valveand it is, of course, understood that when the cam is adjusted from the dash, the position of the volume valve is changed but the charge throttling valve and the exhaust throttling valve are not moved. The position of the cam after once being adjusted determines the movement of the exhaust throttling valve by the opening movement of the charge throttling valve so that when the cam is in the position shown in Figure 12, when the throttle valve is operated, the guide member moves verticaily a predetermined distance without exerting a pull on the arm of the exhaust throttle valve, whereby the exhaust throttle valve remains closed while the throttle valve is opened. Upon the further movement of the throttle valve, the guide member travels from the vertical portion ofthe slot into the substantially horizontal portion and starts to. open the main exhaust throttle.
It will be seen that the shape of the slot can be changed so as to change the relative movement of these valves as with a slot constructed as herein shown to form a guide way, the guide member travels therein in such a manner that the movement of the two valves canbe regulated to a nicety and as the guide way is adjustable and capable ,of being adjusted from the dash, the operator can place the adjustable cam plate in any position desired and after once being positioned, it is held in that position so as to control the movement of the valves to regulate the application of heat. By this particular construction any number of adjustments of the valves can be obtained so as to regulate the opening and closing movement of the controlling valves by the movement of the throttle.
In Figure 16 I show a volume controlling valve 105 arranged in the inlet nipple 106 of the valve casing 107 provided with a sha ft 108 carrying an arm 109 which is adj ustably connected to the cam 1.10 by a link 111 and it will be seen that the position of the cam changes the position of the volume valve 105 so as to regulate the size of the opening at the sourceof supply of the exhaust gases leading to the heat jacket of the charge forming device.
In Figure 1'3" it show a volume controlling valve 112 disposed in the outlet nipple 113 of the heat jacket 114. The valve carries an arm 116 which is adjustably connected to the cam plate 117 by a link 118 which controls the inlet for the exhaust gases by the adjustment of the cam.
In Figure 18 I show .a valve 119 arranged within the outlet nipple 120 of the heat acket 121 of the charge forming device having an arm 122 adjustably connected to the cam 124 by a link'125 so as to hold a certain volume of exhaust gases in the heat jacket.
In the preferred embodiment of my invention I have shown an air heater disposed over the main exhaust line so that the air is heated by the exhaust gases and conveyed to the charge forming device so that the positionof the exhaust throttling valve determines the temperature of the air delivered to the charge forming device as the air heater is arranged on the engine side of the exhaust throttling valve and in connection with the additional air inlet I am able to regulate the temperature of air delivered to the charge forming device.
IVhile I have shown a particular construction of air heater and the particular position of the same, I am aware that various other constructions of air heaters can be used and the same can be placed in different positions without departing from the spirit of my invention.
In Figure 19 I show a construction of damper control substantially the same as shown in Figure 4, in which 126 indicates the main exhaust, 127 the heat jacket arranged to heat the charge in its passage to the internal combustion engine having an outlet pipe 128 connected to the exhaust pipe 126 to the mufller side of'the throttling exhaust valve 129, which is controlled by the movement of the throttle through the medium of a cam as clearly described in the description of Figure 4. The outlet pipe 128 is provided with a valve 130 connected to the cam 131 whereby the position of the cam determines the position of the valve so as to control the passage of heatthrough the heating jacket. The heat jacket 127 is shown on the charge forming device 132 which is provided with an air inlet 133. Arranged over the pipe 128 is an air heater 134 so as to heat the air entering the air inlet 133 of the charge forming device and the heat supplied to the charge'forming device is influenced by the position of the valve 130 arranged. on the outlet of the heat jacke for heating the charge in its passage to the en- 1118.
b In Figure 20 I show an arrangement of valves and heating means substantially as shown in Figure 6, in which 135 is a charge forming device, 136 the heat jacket, 137 the exhaust pipe or manifold provided with an exhaust throttling valve 138 connected to the heater disposedaround the outlet pipeof the heating acket for heating the charge in its passage to the engine so that the air delivered to the charge forming device will be heated and in Figure 19 the valve is disposed in the outlet of the heating jacket, while in Figure 20, the valve is disposed in the inlet to the heating jacket and arranged to be operated simultaneously with the main throttle exhaust valve so that the position of these valves influenceslthe heating effect on the warm air stove for heating the air delivered to the charge forming device and I have found by constructing an air heater and placing the same in this position, the position of the valve influences the amount. of heat supplied to the warm air stove so that the temperature of the air can be determined and controlled.
In all of the various constructions of manifolds, heat jackets and valve casings herein shown and described, the valves and the operating means are adapted to be interconnect- .ed with the throttle valve and the cam plate so as to apply as large a volume of exhaust gases as desired to the heating charge and for as long a time as desired and so arranged that when the throttle valve has opened to any,
predetermined position from closed to fully open position that the-connection between the various valves will operate the valves so as to increase or decrease the application of the heat by the position of the cam plate and while I have shown certain details of construction in connection with the various forms illustrated, I am aware that various changes can be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.
' From the foregoing description it will be seen that I have provided heat controlling means for charge forming devices wherein means is provided for diverting the entire volume of exhaust gases from the exhaust manifold through a heating chamber and holding said volume within said heating chamber a predetermined length of time as the throttle valve moves into open position, means being provided for changing the time of applying the application of heat through the medium of a cam which is adjustable from the dash, whereby I am able to cause the exhaust throttling valve to dwell on its seat a predetermined length of time as the throttle valve m es into open position- It will also be seen that by the use of a volume valve'connected to the adjustable cam which controls the movement of the charge throttling valve and exhaust throttling valve, that the volume of exhaust gases passing through the heating chamber is regulated. The position of the volume valve in respect to the inlet and outlet of the heating chamber determines the temperature of the charge and I have shown various ways for accomplishing this result, but it is, of course, under stood that I do not wish to limit myself to the forms shown as the installation of a heat control to an internal combustion engine and charge forming device requires various changes according to the design of the motor and charge forming device and theretorel am aware that various changes of construction can be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.
