Abstract

Printing; cellulose esters or ethers, dyeing; regenerated celluloses, dyeing.-White or coloured discharge or resist effects are obtained upon textile materials made of or containing cellulose esters or ethers by the application of compounds of reducing metals, e.g. stannous or titanous compounds, such as stannous or titanous chloride, in the presence of compounds containing the thiocyanate radicle, e.g. ammonium thiocyanate or alkali or alkaline-earth thiocyanates. The discharge may be assisted by the presence of acids, especially organic acids, e.g. citric or tartaric acid, and/or swelling agents. Thus acids may be incorporated in the discharge preparations or the fabrics may be pretreated therewith as described in Specification 334,518, [Class 15 (ii), Dyeing, Processes &c. for]. As suitable colours for incorporation in the discharges are specified the resistant basic dyes of the di- and tri-arylmethane, azine, oxazine, and thiazine series. The fabric may be coloured uniformly or locally with a suitable dischargeable dyestuff and printed or otherwise locally treated with the reducing metal compound in presence of a thiocyanate, or it may be treated locally with a preparation containing the metal compound and a thiocyanate and treated subsequently with a suitable dischargeable dyestuff. The invention is applicable to materials containing cellulose esters or ethers in admixture with other fibres such as cotton, wool, silk, or regenerated celluloses, with or without suitable colouration of the non-ester or non-ether fibres. The following examples are specified. (1) A fabric woven from cellulose acetate yarns and dyed with p-amino-benzeneazodimethylaniline, diazotized on the fibre and coupled with b -oxynaphthoic acid, is printed with an aqueous paste containing gum arabic, auramine, stannous chloride, potassium thiocyanate, and citric acid, and steamed or aged, to obtain a brilliant yellow pattern on a black ground. (2) A similar fabric, similarly dyed, is printed with a similar aqueous paste containing methylene blue as the dyestuff, steamed or aged, and treated in a soap bath containing sodium perborate to obtain a greenish blue pattern on a black ground. (3) A similar fabric dyed with a dispersion of the dyestuff 5-nitro-2-anisidine-->dimethylaniline is printed with a similar aqueous paste containing malachite green as the dyestuff, and steamed or aged to obtain a brilliant green pattern on a red ground. (4) A similar fabric dyed with cellit blue R, 5-nitro-2-anisidine-->ddimethylaniline, and 4-chlor-2-nitro-diphenylamine is printed with a similar aqueous paste containing methyl violet 2B as the dyestuff, and steamed or aged to obtain a bright violet print on a brown ground.
